“No student of color should have to walk up to their bike and see this. I came to Oberlin for an education and I am getting this. There are a group of people on campus trying to put fear in our hearts. They are failing. Little do they know, they are sparking a revolution. They were bothered by a Black presence before? Well, they must not know. The movement has just started, Oberlin. ”

  • ‘Too gay to function’

    obiemicroaggressions:

I had a note slipped under my door that read ‘You terrorist whore, you are too gay to function and no god will love you. Let alone your war god. Take off your plastic bag!’ I’m of middle eastern decent and wear the hijab and am also a Lesbian. This was horrible and I feel threatened.

  • Miss Universe, 2000, Lara Dutta from India. This brief video is a compilation of her appearances in the pageant.

What evidence do you see of the “third worldization” of international pageants?

How does the pageant create the idea that the stage for global competition has been leveled?

Do you see instances of nationalism in Dutta’s performance?

How are women equated with nations in the pageant?

What qualities make Dutta a source of national pride and global admiration?

How is Dutta “manufactured” as a beauty queen?

  • “Japan had a strong recent history of anonymous social networks, like the native network Maxi, and Facebook’s insistence on real names flew in the face of that. In early 2010, Facebook opened a Japanese engineering office to target the Japanese market specifically but, to date, the Network remains relatively unadapted (at 9 percent penetration) compared to other countries worldwide.”
